When starting a business or choosing a career path, everyone goes after the fun, artsy, passion stuff.
In America, we love a good come up story about how someone never gave up on their dreams, never stopped doing what they loved even if they couldn’t feed themselves and/or ended up homeless.
What if I told you there is another way that sucks wayyy less than being broke while trying to create the life of your dreams?
It’s called… doing the boring sh*t first.
Here’s what I mean.
I’ve always been fascinated by people.
I love learning about people and helping people. (some things never change 🥰)
At 18, I wanted to become a social worker… So off I went to college to major in sociology.
I’m not sure what made me look into this, but one day I decided to see how much social workers made and what the earning potential looked like getting out of college. ( I can't remember how much it was back then but I knew it wasn’t going to be enough to support myself)
The next week, I went to the counselors office to change my major to something more lucrative… Biology to become a dentist.
I quickly realized after my first anatomy class that I wasn’t cut out for that kind of schooling either 😂
So I switched again and decided to be an undeclared business major.
I wasn’t sure what kind of business I would be doing but I knew I could get GOOD at it and apply the skills I learned about like management and marketing to anything I decided to do in the future.
One thing led to another, I found out about the earning potential for people in technology and FINALLY decided on a major.
Computer Information Systems, because it was in tech and I could keep my business credits.
The classes for this major were boring, but I knew I could learn it, so I stuck with it.
Best decision ever.
Upon graduating, everyone was freaking out about finding a job "in this crazy economy", but for me getting a “good paying” entry level job was easy.
Here’s why… I majored in something that the skill was in HIGH DEMAND. Every company in any industry needs their data analyzed.
I’m not telling you this to convince you to get into tech or real estate like me.
I’m telling you this to shift your mindset on business and career paths.
Do what’s needed first, so you can do what you love forever!
Within 4 years of graduating college, I was able to get the job I wanted, built a successful business, then relax and only do what I LOVE!
I’m not sure what that looks like for you, but if you are tired of being broke, start with something that you know you can learn how to do, that people need, and makes good money.
It doesn't have to be fun because you know what isn’t fun, being broke…
GET THE MONEY FIRST.
Do boring sh*t… become an expert at it, and invest in your next project for fun or financial freedom.
